Food consumption

The food, from the place where they are produced until they reach the consumer, they undergo a series of transformations. These steps in the food chain  need to be controlled to ensure food safety.

The food chain

The food chain includes all the phases that a food goes through, from when it is produced as a raw material until it reaches the consumer.

The stages of the food chain that a food goes through are:

  • Production: An agricultural, livestock or fishing company gives rise to the product.
  • Food industry: It processes the food: it prepares, transforms and packages the food.
  • Marketing: It is responsible for transporting, distributing, storing and selling food in stores and supermarkets.
  • Consumption: The consumer uses the food at home.        

The European Union requires rigorous quality controls in all processes in the food industry.

The traceability is the registered sequence of all phases by passing a food from production to consumption. If there is any type of problem, the history of the food can be retrieved, being able to locate where the problem may have originated.
