What is health?
Formerly it was understood that health was the absence of disease, but today this definition is much more precise. In 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not only as the absence of disease. Therefore, health has three main components:
- Physical health. The organs and systems must function properly to allow perform vital functions normally.
- Mental health. There must be an emotional and psychological well-being that allows the activities of daily life to be carried out.
- Social health. The conditions of the person's environment must allow satisfying their needs. Thus, peace, education, housing, work with a decent wage, social justice, etc., are necessary for health.
