Organization of the Nervous System

The nervous system is made up of the Central Nervous System and the Peripheral Nervous System.

The functions of the nervous system are:

• Connect the sensory receptors with the nervous centers, and these with the effector organs.
• Transmit nerve impulses.
• Process the information received by the sensitive stimuli to carry out the most appropriate physiological response.
• Perform mental functions. It is responsible for feelings and emotions.

In order to perform these functions, the nervous system is composed of:

• Nervous centers, where the integration of the stimuli takes place and the responses originate. In vertebrates, the nerve centers are located in the encephalon and spinal cord, which together are called the Central Nervous System (CNS). Here there are many very complex connections between neurons that allow us to elaborate the answers.
• Nerves, which connect nerve centers with receptor organs and effector organs. Nerves are made up of the axons of neurons, and they connect the different parts of our body. Together, these nerves form the so-called Peripheral Nervous System (PNS).
