Second meiotic division

After completion of the first meiotic division, each resulting cell follows normal mitosis. A brief interphase occurs between the two meiotic divisions in which the DNA is not duplicated.

The second meiotic division (or meiosis II) is divided into the same four phases as mitosis:

Prophase II

The chromosomes (two chromatids each) condense and return.

In animal cells, the centrioles are directed to each pole of the cell and the achromatic spindle is formed.

In plant cells, which lack centrioles, the achromatic spindle is also formed.

Metaphase II

The chromosomes (with two chromatids) lie at the equatorial plate, with the chromatids joined by the kinetochore.

Anaphase II

The two chromatids on each chromosome separate and move toward the poles of the cell.

Telophase II

The chromosomes, each with a chromatid, are decondensed again. The achromatic spindle disappears and the nuclear envelopes and nucleoli appear.

Cytokinesis II

As a result of meiosis, four different haploid daughter cells (n chromosomes) are obtained from a single diploid cell (2n).
