6.2. Structure and composition of the Earth

Internal structure of the Earth

According to the data provided by the studies of P and S waves, two different models have been proposed to explain what the internal structure of the Earth is like:

  • Geochemical model, in which the Earth is divided into layers according to its chemical composition.
  • Dynamic model, in which the Earth is divided into layers according to its physical state and mechanical properties under the pressures and temperatures at which it is found.
