6.1. The biosphere

The biosphere is the set of all living beings that live on Earth and their relationships (among themselves and with the environment in which they live). The biosphere is not really a "layer" of the Earth, it is part of the earth's crust , the hydrosphere and the atmosphere.

The biosphere is characterized by:

  • Biodiversity. It is the variety of living beings that live on Earth (or in a given ecosystem), with all its genetic varieties of races and subspecies.
  • All the components of the biosphere are interrelated and there is a balance  between all of them. If there is an alteration in this balance, it can spread to the rest of the biosphere.
