3.1.2. Properties of minerals

Properties of minerals

The properties that a mineral has are unique and depend on what components it has and how they are arranged. That is, it depends on its chemical composition and structure.

Although the color and shape are the most obvious to recognize a mineral, we have to take into account other characteristics so as not to make mistakes with their identification.

The different properties of minerals can be measured and, although these properties can vary between different specimens of the same mineral, there are other properties that are decisive for their recognition.

For example, pyrite can be found with a different appearance, but it has unique characteristics that differentiate it from other minerals.
