8.2. Cellular division

Cellular division

The cell division  can be done in two ways:

  • MitosisSomatic cells divide by mitosis to give rise to cells with identical genetic material.
    • In unicellular organisms, mitosis is an asexual reproduction mechanism.
    • In multicellular organisms, mitosis is a cell multiplication mechanism to renew damaged cells or tissues.
  • MeiosisGerm cells divide by meiosis to form haploid cells that, after fertilization, give rise to diploid cells.
